I've decided to contribute my Pirate Song.

PIRATE SONG

Oh, we sail the seven seas,
Adventuring we go,
We like to stay relaxed,
And take it nice and slow.

( Start of Chorus ) <start></start>
There is just one thing
That will get me in a state,
When you take the ‘P’ off pirate…
(SHOUT) I become irate.
(Make angry noises) Grrr Grrrr
( End of Chorus )

Oh, we sail through storms and rain,
It doesn’t bother us at all,
And we like the sunny weather,
We really have a ball.

Chorus

We like whales and turtles,
We like dolphins too – ahhh,
And we love the big wide sea,
It’s a nice, relaxing blue.

Chorus

We search for buried treasure,
Around the world we go,
But I don’t like the cold,
So we stay away from snow.

Chorus

We don’t fight and walk the plank,
And other barbarous acts,
We’d rather play some tunes,
And chill out to the max.

Chorus
I was asked to design a sediment trap that could cope with several litres per minute of heavily sedimented water.
Came up with this cheap and easy to build design that uses less space than the conventional approach and is light and easy to clean out.

The basic principal is - the water moving upwards is going a lot slower than the water moving fast down the sides of the buckets.
It is important for maximum efficiency that the buckets are very level and buckets without an over-hanging lip are more forgiving in this area.-
What we are aiming for is laminar flow down the sides of the buckets, a thin, smooth sheet of water. If it becomes turbulent then the flow rate needs to be reduced or use wider rather than taller buckets(and tub).
If sediment at the bottom of the buckets or tub is being stirred up by the down-flow then increasing the height of the stand and raising the lower bucket may help.
Bigger is better and more buckets is always an option too.Chrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06614020496044231701noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12990012.post-57245392708334634482017-11-25T16:52:00.001+10:302017-11-25T16:55:07.247+10:30

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 10.0pt;">Koalas have a very unusual GI tract - They have, for their
size, a relatively large small
intestine that carries the contents of their stomachs to a 'T-junction'
with a large tube. One side of this tube gradually tapers off to end blindly
and is commonly referred to as a 'caecum'. The other side, the large intestine,
heads off in the usual direction towards the colon.

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 10.0pt;">In order to simulate the eating of gas-producing
carbohydrates, a tube was inserted to approximately halfway down the 'caecum'
and the intestines were inflated as hard as I could blow - still nothing was
coming out of the other end.

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 10.0pt;">After recovering from almost fainting, I estimated the
pressure to be about 2 PSI. This may
not seem very high but it is the equivalent of laying the animal on its back
and placing a weight of about 25 kilograms on its chest. Enough to make breathing
difficult and the heart unable to operate at full capacity.

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 10.0pt;">The GI tract was then deflated leaving a small pocket of air
(approx. 100ml) near the beginning of the large intestine and simulation of
natural intestinal wall muscle movement was attempted. No amount or degree of
manipulation or squeezing could induce that pocket of air to move anywhere. The
only way the gas could be moved if the animal was alive would be by being
dragged through during the normal and slow process of digestion and excretion.

Issues

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 10.0pt;">1: This is a single Koala GI tract; it may be different from
others.

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 10.0pt;">2: It could be the case that excess gas could be driven up
the small intestine and released through the mouth but I'm calling this very
unlikely and difficult to test as a deceased animal's pyloric sphincter is
likely to be functionally different from a live one.

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 10.0pt;">Koala GI tracts are capable of being inflated to unhealthily
high pressures without release of gases or digested material.

size, a relatively large small intestine that carries the contents of their
stomachs to a 'T-junction' with a large tube. One side of this tube gradually
tapers off to end blindly and is commonly referred to as a 'caecum'. The other
side, the large intestine, heads off in the usual direction towards the colon.

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 10.0pt;">In order to simulate the ingestion of gas-producing
carbohydrates, the small intestine was severed close to its distal end and a
tube was inserted to approximately halfway down the 'caecum'. The distal end of
the small intestine was the clamped around the tube to prevent leakage.

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 10.0pt;">Air was blown into the tube causing the 'caecum' to distend
around the tube opening. As more air was blown in it further distended towards
the blind end. Upon reaching full distension at the blind end, as more air was
blown in, the distension of the 'caecum' continued towards the large intestine,
eventually reaching the juncture of the large intestine and the distal colon.

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 10.0pt;">Being a healthy adult male that regularly exercizes my lungs
to their full capacity I estimated the pressure in the GI tract to be slightly
above 2 PSI (pounds per square inch). This may not seem very high but it is the
equivalent of laying the animal on its back and placing a weight of about 25
kilograms on its chest. Breathing would

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 10.0pt;">be very laboured and the heart wouldn't be anywhere near

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 10.0pt;">The GI tract was then deflated leaving a small pocket of air
(approx. 100ml) in the proximal region of the large intestine and simulation of
peristalsis was attempted. No amount or degree of manipulation or squeezing
could induce that pocket of air to move anywhere. The only way the gas could be
moved if the animal was alive would be by being dragged through during normal
and slow process of digestion and excretion.

Conclusions

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 10.0pt;">Koala GI tracts are capable of being inflated to unhealthily
high pressures without release of gases or digesta.

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 10.0pt;">Ingestion by koalas of foods high in digestible
carbohydrates would cause gastric distension and intra-abdominal pressure
incompatible with long-term survival.

Here's the quick and dirty (and suprizingly fast) fix.

The shortcut keys are for Windows - if you have a computer named after a fruit or that other one which makes you type a lot there will be something similar.

1: Open the FASTA file in notepad.
2: Open "Search and Replace" <Ctrl + H>.
3: Replace All ">" with "
".
4: Save the file and open it in your favourite browser - Now you see!
5: Select All <Ctrl + A>, Copy <Ctrl + C> and Paste <Ctrl + V> back into notepad.
6: Optionally Replace All "
" with ">" and save - Job Done!
Chrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06614020496044231701noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12990012.post-65949600517063453622016-01-13T16:00:00.000+10:302016-01-13T16:00:21.542+10:30Folder -> HTM index - FREE Program -

Folder to HTM index creates a web (htm) page in the folder of your choice with links to all the files in that folder.
Works on any version of Windows - no need to install, just download and doubleclick to run it.
I created the program because browsing files in some mobile devices can
be very tedious - and after having downloaded almost fifty chapters of a
book, each in individual webpages.

Short answer - Cup of warm water with a pinch of salt.

I developed excessive earwax so I visited the pharmacist and bought some drops to fix it - tasted terrible and didn't work. Let's jump on the interweb and do some research: Those bored Texan housewives that write well meaning advice all over the myriad of advice sites created to cater for them mainly suggested olive oil; probably won't do much harm...

Let's try google scholar: It seems when you are dealing with a problem that mostly clears up in a few days for most people most of the time all you need is a very poorly designed, and I hesitate to even use the term, "clinical trial" and you can sell just about anything proprietry. Well done big pharma...

One study did particularly stand out though - it used water as a control! and that water seemed to be working.

Here's the catch - Different people have different earwax so this may or may not work for you - here's how you find out.

1: Add a crystal of salt to a spoonfull or so of tepid water.
2: Obtain a sample of the offending earwax (From outer ear only).
3: Immerse sample in water and see if it dissolves (Make note of time required).

If successful simply scale up the quantity - a pinch of salt to a cup of luke-warm water.

Method: Tilt head on side, use a spoon to pour water into ear, sing the chorus of your favourite song, tilt head to the other side to drain the ear. Repeat as needed.
The idea being that evolution is a competition for survival of the fittest gene and that it is the most successful genes that will gradually become more numerous and be transmitted to later generations.

Sexual reproduction is the means by which the genes of two organisms that have successfully survived to the point of being able to reproduce, are combined in a somewhat haphazard way to produce new organisms that will go on to face the trials of evolution. The fittest of these new organisms going on to recombine their genes in the next generation and so on.

As genes are the architects of the phenotypes that face the trials of evolution it is necessary that the most evolutionary successful phenotypes will have been the result of having certain genes and this will be reflected in the frequencies of the occurrence of a population's genes.

However, although it may appear that evolution is acting at a genetic level, evolution can only
act directly on phenotypes and any correlation within the genetic diversity of an organism is an indirect result of the process of evolution acting on the population of phenotypes. In the same sense evolution cannot act on groups, only on the sum of the individuals within that group. It is a logical necessity that the evolutionary fittest phenotypes will carry the genes for those phenotypes, this does not mean that the genes in any way competed in an evolutionary sense for transmission to the next generation.

It has been argued that some social insects where there are sterile workers helping to raise the offspring of relatives are examples of genes successfully competing for transmission to the next generation at the expense of the individual, sterile organism. There is no evidence that genes are competing here, in the game of evolutionary poker this poor sterile individual has simply been dealt a bad hand that happens to be to the advantage of his cousin. If evolution had given him the brains to realise what was going on he'd spend a lot less time babysitting and much more time, metaphorically speaking, at the pub with his mates. As it is, he is just following blindly his less than personally advantageous genetic programming – nothing more.

Evolution isn’t the result of competing genes, it is the result of individual phenotypes interacting and competing within an ever changing environment.

Feel free to argue amongst yourselves in the comments.Chrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06614020496044231701noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12990012.post-39121209440178718052012-10-11T22:27:00.001+10:302012-10-11T22:27:52.021+10:30Pipe Organ Repairs

I was asked to fix a 'broken key' on this two-storey high beauty.

The Specs.
Built in 1870 in England by P.C. Conacher it has three keyboards each with 56 notes and the
pedal board contains 30 notes. There are 17 speaking stops, 5 couplers and a total of 986
pipes. The largest pipes are approximately 8 feet long and the smallest pipes are about one
half inch.
It was built to an older design and even though an electric pump had been added, the
original hand operated bellows where still intact and operable.
End specs.

Spent the afternoon in Chris' Heaven, scrabbling about inside figuring out which bits did
what, when, where and how; with a big silly grin on my face the whole time. I found
and repaired the connection on the key that was broken.

Having fixed the key, had to test it - stretched both my index fingers in preparation,
took a deep breath, depressed a low E key, slowly wound the volume up to full and belted out
that immortal riff by Deep Purple.............. Smoke on The Water.......sounded absolutely brilliant.
Need a challenging ride in Adelaide but are acutely aware of the problems associated with cycle/car interactions - read more for details

START - Where Seaview rd. at West Beach crosses over the River Torrens.

Get yourself on the North side with the river to your right and from here just follow the track about 12.5 kms into town.
<strike>At one point, shortly after the graveyard, the track appears to end in a road but if you follow the dirt footpath overlooking the river to the right you'll be back on the track again in about 15 metres</strike>(been fixed, now a sealed track).
After going under the big bridge, turn left, then after a couple of metres, turn right and keep heading in that direction until you come to the railway line.
Here, cross the bridge over the river then go through the tunnel under the railway and follow the path, keeping the river to your left until you see a sign on the wall stating "Grundy Gardens". Turn right here and go up the path to Frome rd. where you can cross at the traffic lights.
Now comes a "warm-up" climb. Heading right, up Frome rd, there is a bike path painted onto the footpath that pedestrians are oblivious to, so exercise caution - especially outside the medical school from where groups of young trainees often spill out with no regard for their own safety.
At the top turn left - you can play with the traffic or make your way along the footpath for 500 m. before crossing North tce. and East tce. at the traffic lights.
Follow the bike path through the Eastern parklands heading South and crossing Rundle, Bartels and Wakefields rds to Victoria Pk. racecourse.
Keep the racecourse to your left and stay on the track until you come to the corner of Greenhill and Fullarton rds, then cross both at the traffic lights.
The bike path continues along the outskirts of Glenside Hospital until you reach Glen Osmond rd. where you turn left and head upwards. There is no more bike path for the next 2.5 kms, you can ride in the traffic or make your way slowly along the footpath, reserving energy for the big climb.
After crossing at the traffic lights at the top of Glen Osmond rd you'll find the start of the Crafers bike path a little further up on the left.
Next follows about 10 kms of pretty steady climbing and great views.
Just before getting to Crafers where you'll need to turn left onto Mt Lofty Summit rd there is a steep decline, watch carefully for opportunities to make the most of the momentum you gain.

Now on Mt Lofty Summit rd you have two choices
1: you can ride on the smooth road with traffic driving 60-80+ km/h on thin lanes around winding, blind corners.
Or
2: Stay to the left of the white line on the side of the road and out of the way of traffic. Here, the surface isn't loose or particularly slippery but very rough. It was designed by a cyclist hater to sap what energy you have remaining.
I'd recommend option 2. Let's face it, the only reason you're here is because you like a challenge and it is always good not to scratch the paint on the car of a 'would be racing driver' with your compound fractures.

It is tough going for a couple of km, but once you see the transmission towers on your left, the worst is over.
From here it is a gentle ride until you see the signs on the right, go through the gate and either way around the car park.
The summit is behind the large building, which, if I wasn't hallucinating by this time, is an odd colour of light pink.

At this point, if you're reading this, I'd like to unreservedly apologise for being somewhat brusque to the young lady in blue lycra that tried to strike up a conversation with me at the summit. Whilst there is no excuse for impoliteness, in my defence, my body had used up its last reserves of glucose and caffeine about thirty minutes ago and the tattered remains of my brain functions were too busy getting confused about the best way to stay conscious to respond appropriately.

Getting down is much easier.
Follow the same route in reverse except...

At one point, even though the bike lane is wide enough to drive a small truck through, the signage indicates that you MUST ride on the old freeway for a while.
This isn't really a problem, the lanes are wide and traffic is very sparse - and you can keep up with what there is of it too.
Or you can just stick to the bike path where you'll meet those idiots that insist they need all of the path to go up and grunt as they gesture towards the signs. If you show fear, they'll try to block the path - adopt a determined look, make a bee-line for the largest of them and accelerate as fast as you can - they grunt some more as they get out of the way.

Having left my peak physical and cognitive performance in a heap by the roadside half way up that mountain, I chose to come down under brakes and enjoy the view.Chrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06614020496044231701noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12990012.post-21933958345916586712011-02-13T22:34:00.001+10:302011-02-13T22:36:45.070+10:30The Voynich Manuscript - UpdateMore news on the Voynich Manuscript - See The Voynich Manuscript - Solved (Posted Below).
I've liberated the power from an inexpensive hand-cranked torch so it can be used to run an inexpensive FM radio. The torch contains a small rechargeable battery that is charged by turning a crank-handle.

Why? - This equipment is being sent to a part of the world where batteries are very expensive, where farmers need torches to manage night-time pests and where farmers need radios that give them access to weather reports which help with crop management.

Click Read More build details.

The model of torch was chosen because the plastic crank-handle can be easily replaced when it breaks, for its reasonably rugged build and for the three LEDs which give good light and last forever; And it was inexpensive.
I cracked open the case and found a series of gears connected the crank-handle to a small generator from which two wires connected to a small circuit board. The three LEDs are soldered to the circuit board from which two wires connect to an LIR2032 battery.
A quick search on google revealed that the battery was 3 volt / 40mAh - enough juice to power the radio.
Experimentation showed that the circuit board prevented too much power from reaching the battery or the LEDs and that when that little battery dies the hand-crank can still be used to power both of the devices.

Two new wires were soldered to the battery and their other ends to the two bolts to be used as terminals. A couple of holes were then drilled through the back of the torch case and the bolts pushed through before securing them with nuts. The whole thing was then put back together.

Next, I found a $2 FM scanning radio built to run on two AAA batteries. A quick look inside the battery compartment showed that the batteries were connected in series to provide 3 volts - just what I needed.
Two wires were then soldered to the battery terminals and a hole drilled into the back of the battery compartment cover. The two wires were then knotted to prevent them accidentally being pulled out before being pushed through the hole in the battery compartment cover and labelled.

The radio can now be powered by connecting the two wires hanging from its rear to the two bolts protruding from the back of the torch case, securing them with a second nut on each bolt.

I decided to keep the two devices as seperate units because the useful life-expectancy of the torch is much longer than that of the radio. The radio is also less expensive to replace.Chrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06614020496044231701noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12990012.post-61710916900747416152010-09-08T21:00:00.001+09:302010-09-08T21:21:06.579+09:302nd Prize Winner - Royal Adelaide Show
.
A model motorcycle I built from ordinary printer paper won a second prize at the Royal Adelaide Show 2010.
